Settings and Privacy for Students

The Settings are not linked on the dashboard or part of the Profile: you need to access them from the Settings (gear ⚙) menu on the left:

Access your Advising settings from the Settings menu on the left

Communication Settings

Review the Communication Settings to ensure that you’re getting only the notifications you want.

Best practice: Unless you have strong reasons for refusing either email or in-app system notifications (the bell 🔔 icon), enable all the checkboxes. That way, you’re unlikely to miss receiving the messages you need.

Important: If you see double asterisks (**) next to SMS**, it’s warning that you have no cell phone number on your student account, which means you cannot be sent text messages. Contact your advisor to get your account corrected.

Communication Preference

Set the Communication Preference for how you want advisors to contact you. If you select Email, for example, you won’t get any text messages from them.

Best practice: Unless you have strong reasons for refusing either email or text messages, leave your setting on No Preference. That way, advisors can send short updates to your phone and complex messages to your email, as appropriate.

Important: If you see double asterisks (**) next to SMS**, it’s warning that you have no cell phone number on your student account, which means you cannot be sent text messages. Contact your advisor to get your account corrected.

Privacy Information

The table on the Privacy tab gives you a quick summary of who can see what information about you. Your Courses and Profile are open, and your Messages and Calendar are your own (closed). Only your Library is under your control.

Important: Your Library defaults to private! Your advisor cannot see any of your uploads or links until you click its lock to make it visible to Advising.
